Ubi Caritas Ola Gjeilo Pdf

'Ubi caritas' or 'Ubi Caritas et Amor' is a hymn of the Western Church, long used as one of the antiphons for the washing of feet on Maundy Thursday. Its text is attributed to Paulinus of Aquileia in 796. The traditional melody probably also stems from the late 8th century. It is now and then sung at Eucharistic Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament and has for a long time been part of the Holy Thursday evening liturgy. The current Roman Catholic Missal (1970, 3rd typical edition 2002) reassigned it from the foot-washing mandatum to the offertory procession at the Holy Thursday evening Mass of the Lord's Supper. It also is found in current Anglican and Lutheranhymnals.

In the second typical edition (1975) of the current Roman Missal, the antiphonal response was altered to read 'Ubi caritas est vera, Deus ibi est,' after certain very early manuscripts. This translates as: 'Where true charity is, God is there.'

Duration: Approx. 3 minutes About the Composer Ola Gjeilo (b. 1978, Norway) currently lives in Los Angeles, where he works as a freelance composer and concert/recording artist. A composer and pianist, he continues to explore his. A cappella Ola Gjeilo's three-work set of Ubi Caritas settings is now complete with Sacred Heart. Musically independent from the other two works, Sacred Heart can stand alone or be performed with the set. A lovely string quartet accompaniment (including full score) balances with the choir, making this a stunning and peaceful adaptation of such a thoughtful text.

In 1960, a translation, 'Where Charity and Love Prevail', was copyrighted, set to the hymn tune CHRISTIAN LOVE in common metre;[1] Dom Paul Benoit, OSB adapted this tune[2] from the chant tune for Veni redemptor gentium. The Taizé chant by Jacques Berthier (1978) uses only the words of the refrain, with verses taken from I Corinthians 13:2-8. Maurice Duruflé's choral setting makes use of the Gregorian melody, using only the words of the refrain and the first stanza. Paul Halley combined phrases of the original chant melody sung in Latin with other songs in the track 'Ubi caritas' on his 1991 album Angel on a Stone Wall.

More recent versions of the hymn for choir have been composed by David Conte, Stephen DeCesare, Ola Gjeilo, and University of Aberdeen professor Paul Mealor. Mealor's setting, entitled 'Ubi Caritas et Amor,' was included in the ceremony at the 2011 Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton.[3][4]

Text[edit]

Latin textEnglish translation
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Congregavit nos in unum Christi amor.
Exsultemus, et in ipso jucundemur.
Timeamus, et amemus Deum vivum.
Et ex corde diligamus nos sincero.
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Simul ergo cum in unum congregamur:
Ne nos mente dividamur, caveamus.
Cessent iurgia maligna, cessent lites.
Et in medio nostri sit Christus Deus.
Ubi caritas et amor, Deus ibi est.
Simul quoque cum beatis videamus,
Glorianter vultum tuum, Christe Deus:
Gaudium quod est immensum, atque probum,
Saecula per infinita saeculorum. Amen.
Where charity and love are, there God is.
The love of Christ has gathered us into one.
Let us exult, and in Him be joyful.
Let us fear and let us love the living God.
And from a sincere heart let us love each other (and Him).
Where charity and love are, there God is.
Therefore, whensoever we are gathered as one:
Lest we in mind be divided, let us beware.
Let cease malicious quarrels, let strife give way.
And in the midst of us be Christ our God.
Where charity and love are, there God is.
Together also with the blessed may we see,
Gloriously, Thy countenance, O Christ our God:
A joy which is immense, and also approved:
Through infinite ages of ages. Amen.

Sacred Heart (Ubi Caritas III) is a setting of the 2nd stanza from the three-stanza Ubi Caritas text. I’d already set the first in 1999 (Ubi Caritas) and the third one in 2012 (Ubi Caritas II: Through Infinite Ages).

While Ubi Caritas II partly played around with some of the material from my first Ubi Caritas, Sacred Heart (Ubi Caritas III) is completely independent from the other two, content-wise, and also deploys a string quartet. Ubi Caritas and Ubi Caritas II were written for a cappella choir.

With all three works now published by Walton Music, the set is complete. And while each one of them are independent works, they were also written with the potential in mind of being performed in succession, or spread across a concert program/recording.
